How To Easily Repay A Debt When You (really) Don’t Want To

Try these fun tips to clear your debts to zero shillings.

Repaying debts sucks. It has nothing to do with who gave you the loan or the reason you got the loan.

If banks didn’t have strict consequences for debtors, it would be a mess. And even then, people try to dodge repaying financial institutions.

Friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances are more lenient with us but we owe them the courtesy of repaying back the whole sum on time.

So what makes it hard to pay those who trust us and give us a helping hand?

We don’t like to lose money. It is hypocritical to those who lend us but it is what it is.

Here are some tips to help you clear your debts.

1. Don’t get into debt

This doesn’t help if you’re already in debt, but it’s a reminder. However much we dislike repaying, we can get trapped in a cycle of borrowing. When this happens, we can find ourselves dodging creditors and getting new ones, repaying part of debts and just creating a terrible financial situation.

If you hate repaying, start by cutting the circle of people you borrow from. Build trust with the few and commit to that. Don’t miss this read on why you shouldn’t worry about your debts.

2. Give yourself time

When you get the money to repay, give yourself some time before handing over the money. Keep the repayment money separate but give yourself time to process that it has to go! Get used to the idea of giving it away and the reality that you owe someone money.

3. Use a similar amount to invest in yourself

Once you have the money set aside, you can pick a similar amount and do something you want to do. Take the focus away from repaying the debt and invest time and effort in wisely spending the same amount on something worthwhile to you.

4. Package the money as a gift

Package the money as a gift. You can even create a repayment ritual. You can write a letter to the person, or write about how you feel about repaying. Find a suitable way for you to make it feel like a gift rather than a repayment.

You can also make it a digital payment rather than cash.

5. Repay during a hangout

Make the payment during a fun time. You can even treat the person you owe to a night out, brunch, or dinner. The payment can be part of a treat or it can be part of a hangout.
