Anambra School Triumphs Over UK Schools To Win Inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition.

In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess, students from St. John Vianney Science College in Ukwulu, Anambra State, Nigeria, have emerged victorious in the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, defeating top schools from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The virtual event, held on 19 June 2025, showcased the exceptional debating skills of young minds from across the two nations, with the Anambra school clinching the title of grand champion.

The competition featured a fiercely contested lineup, with four Nigerian schools—St. John Vianney Science College, Britarch Schools (Abuja), Sure Start School (Abuja), and St. Augustine’s College (Jos)—competing against prominent UK institutions, including Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School. After intense preliminary rounds, St. John Vianney Science College advanced to the finals, where they outshone their British counterparts, Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School, before facing another Nigerian school in an all-Nigerian final.

The team from St. John Vianney Science College demonstrated confidence, eloquence, and sharp critical thinking, earning widespread praise for their compelling arguments and polished delivery. Their victory marks a significant achievement for Nigerian education, highlighting the potential of the country’s youth on an international stage.

“We are immensely proud of our students for this historic win,” said a spokesperson for St. John Vianney Science College. “This victory is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the quality of education we strive to provide. It also underscores the bright future of Nigerian youth in global academic competitions.”

The UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, designed to foster intellectual exchange and collaboration between the two nations, has been hailed as a groundbreaking initiative. Organisers expressed their delight at the high level of engagement and the spirited performances from all participants.

Social media platforms, particularly X, have been abuzz with congratulations for the Anambra school, with posts celebrating the students’ triumph and their contribution to Nigeria’s growing reputation for academic excellence. “Anambra school students defeat United Kingdom schools and others to emerge champion of inaugural UK-Nigeria competition. Congratulations my people!” one user posted, reflecting the widespread pride in the achievement.

This victory adds to Anambra State’s growing legacy of educational excellence, following recent successes in global competitions such as the World Affairs Challenge, where other schools from the state have also shone. The win serves as an inspiration for students across Nigeria and beyond, proving that dedication and talent can lead to remarkable achievements on the world stage.

As celebrations continue, St. John Vianney Science College is set to be honoured for their outstanding performance, with many eagerly awaiting their future endeavours in international competitions.
