Vodafone has entered into a 10-year strategic partnership with Microsoft, aiming to bolster Vodafone’s Internet of Things (IoT), capabilities and transform digital platforms for over 300 million businesses, public sector organizations, and consumers across Europe and Africa.

The focus of the agreement is to enhance Vodafone’s global managed IoT connectivity platform, currently linking 175 million devices and platforms worldwide. Microsoft plans to make direct investments in this platform, intending to spin it off as a standalone IoT business by April 2024.

The objective is to rapidly expand the partner and customer ecosystem, driving substantial growth in IoT applications across various industries.

Vodafone will deeply integrate with Microsoft’s Azure cloud and AI platform to strengthen its IoT services. This includes making Vodafone’s IoT platform accessible through open APIs on Azure, enabling a vast community of developers and partners to build innovative solutions.

The collaboration aims to leverage the formidable scale of data and devices from the expanded IoT footprint, feeding advanced AI and machine learning algorithms running in Azure. These algorithms will gain real-time insights from trillions of sensor readings, optimizing processes in various sectors such as industrial, logistics, healthcare, and more.

Microsoft’s generative AI will be infused into Vodafone’s applications and interfaces, delivering hyper-personalized and contextual customer experiences. This spans Vodafone’s TOBi digital assistant, available across 13 countries, and omni-channel touchpoints for both consumers and businesses.

Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle emphasizes the partnership’s potential to accelerate the digital transformation of business customers, particularly small and medium-sized companies.

The overarching goal is to establish Vodafone as a leading integrated IoT connectivity, cloud services, and AI-driven solutions provider, catering to the diverse needs of every customer.

The collaboration signifies a concerted effort to position Vodafone at the forefront of IoT innovation, offering a comprehensive suite of services to enhance digital experiences and drive business efficiency.
