ValueJet Launches Affordable Flights To Boost Nigeria-Gambia Tourism.

Lagos, 16 July 2025 – ValueJet, Nigeria’s rapidly growing airline, has solidified its role as a key player in regional travel by launching direct flights from Lagos to Banjul, The Gambia, offering Nigerian tourists an affordable gateway to one of West Africa’s most enchanting destinations. The new route, which began operations on 15 May 2025, is set to enhance tourism and trade ties between the two nations, making The Gambia’s pristine beaches, vibrant markets, and rich cultural heritage more accessible to budget-conscious travellers.

Operating twice weekly, ValueJet’s flights depart from Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport’s new terminal every Thursday and Sunday at 9:00 PM, arriving in Banjul by 11:30 PM local time. Return flights leave Banjul on Mondays and Fridays at 12:30 AM, landing in Lagos at 5:00 AM, allowing travellers to maximise their time and avoid the city’s morning traffic. With fares starting as low as N500,000, ValueJet is committed to making travel within West Africa both affordable and convenient, as highlighted by the airline’s Managing Director, Capt. Omololu Majekodunmi.

“The launch of our Lagos-Banjul route is a significant milestone in ValueJet’s mission to enhance regional connectivity and drive economic growth across West Africa,” Majekodunmi said. “We are proud to connect Nigerians to The Gambia’s unique attractions, fostering cultural exchange and tourism while keeping costs low.” The route, serviced by ValueJet’s reliable CRJ-900 aircraft, marks the airline as the only carrier offering direct flights between Lagos and Banjul, a move celebrated by both Nigerian and Gambian officials.

The Gambia, often dubbed the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” has seen growing interest from Nigerian travellers drawn to its serene beaches, colonial-era architecture, and lively cultural scene. The Gambia Tourism Board, alongside dignitaries such as the Gambian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamadou Musa Njie, and Director of Tourism Promotions, Tracy Osakwe, warmly welcomed ValueJet’s inaugural flight. The ceremonial water cannon salute at Banjul’s airport underscored the significance of this new connection, which is expected to boost The Gambia’s tourism industry while opening doors for Nigerian businesses and leisure travellers.

ValueJet’s commitment to affordability aligns with its broader vision of democratising air travel in Nigeria and beyond. The airline, which began operations in October 2022, has built a reputation for punctuality and customer-centric service, operating a fleet of Bombardier aircraft to domestic destinations like Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Jos. The Banjul route represents ValueJet’s first international expansion, with plans for further West African destinations in the pipeline. By offering competitive pricing and a seamless booking process through its website, flyvaluejet.com, the airline is making travel to The Gambia an attractive option for Nigerians seeking adventure without breaking the bank.

The Gambia’s appeal lies in its blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, from the bustling markets of Serrekunda to the tranquil shores of Kololi Beach. Nigerian travellers, like Titi, a Lagos-based travel enthusiast, are increasingly drawn to the destination for its accessibility and charm. “I saw pictures of Banjul’s beaches and markets on social media, and I knew I had to visit,” she said. “ValueJet’s direct flight made it easy and affordable. It’s the perfect escape from Lagos’ hustle and bustle.”

The route is also poised to strengthen economic ties, with Nigerian businesses eyeing opportunities in The Gambia’s growing tourism and trade sectors. The Gambia’s government has pledged full support for ValueJet’s operations, with officials noting the potential for increased cultural exchange and regional integration. As ValueJet continues to expand its footprint, the airline is not only bridging distances but also fostering a deeper connection between two of West Africa’s most dynamic nations.
