Unai Emery Aims to Transform Aston Villa into Title Contenders After Securing Champions League Spot

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has set his sights on turning the club into Premier League title contenders following their successful qualification for the Champions League.

Villa secured fourth place in the league, clinching a coveted spot in Europe’s premier competition, after Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday. As they prepare to face Crystal Palace in the season’s final game, Villa sits 20 points behind league leaders Manchester City. However, Emery is determined to bridge this gap and lead Villa to their first league title since 1981.

“It is a dream. It is very difficult. When we were at the beginning of the season playing two matches against City and Arsenal, we won both matches. We were there,” Emery said. “Those teams are amazing with consistency. I want to get better and I have my dreams and I believe in my dreams. Of course, my objective is to win the Premier League or the Champions League.”

Emery revealed that his team celebrated their Champions League qualification on Tuesday night, following Spurs’ defeat. “The party on Tuesday was fantastic. I was really happy with the players and coaches. I know how important it is to be there [in the Champions League] and compete in it,” he said. “Through the Premier League, to get it is very difficult. To get it is fantastic. Now, after the next challenge, it is about preparing for the new season.”

Ollie Watkins, who has scored 19 Premier League goals this season, has been a key figure in Villa’s success. The financial boost from Champions League qualification will be significant, but Emery emphasized the need for astute decisions in the transfer market. “When I arrived here, my conversations with [owners] Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens were about winning trophies and getting Europe. To get there you have to be competitive,” he said. “Even if we don’t have the budget, we have to be intelligent and clinical in our decisions. This is still my objective. We are in the Champions League and we want to keep it. It is our challenge.”

Emery, who won his only league title in 2018 with Paris Saint-Germain, has also claimed the Europa League trophy four times. His ambition and strategic planning now aim to propel Aston Villa to new heights, making them formidable contenders on both domestic and European fronts.
