Trump Clashes With Maine Governor Over Transgender Athlete Ban

Trump Clashes With Maine Governor Over Transgender Athlete Ban.

US President Donald Trump engaged in a tense exchange with Democratic Governor Janet Mills on Friday over his recent executive order banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. The confrontation took place during a televised meeting with state governors at the White House, where Trump warned Mills of potential funding cuts if her state refused to comply with the directive.

“Two weeks ago, I signed an executive order banning men from playing in women’s sports. Many Democrats are fighting me on that. I hope you continue because you’ll never win another race,” Trump declared, claiming the order was intended to “protect women.”

When questioned directly about compliance, Mills responded, “I’m complying with state and federal laws.”

“Well, we are the federal law,” Trump replied. “You better do it because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t.”

“See you in court,” Mills shot back.

“Good, I’ll see you in court. That should be a real easy one. And enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics,” Trump retorted, visibly frustrated.

The executive order allows federal agencies to withhold funding from schools that permit transgender athletes to compete on women’s teams. However, Maine officials have insisted they will continue to follow state law, which permits transgender students to participate based on their gender identity, citing protections under the Maine Human Rights Act.

Federal Investigation Launched

Later on Friday, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights announced an investigation into Maine’s education department over alleged Title IX violations. The department cited concerns that Maine’s policies “allow male athletes to compete in girls’ interscholastic athletics” and deny female athletes exclusive access to gender-segregated facilities.

Craig Trainor, the acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, emphasised that compliance with Title IX is necessary to maintain federal funding. “If it wants to forgo federal funds and continue to trample the rights of its young female athletes, that, too, is its choice,” he stated.

Mills denounced the investigation as a “politically directed move” and criticised the president’s attempt to enforce compliance through financial pressure. “This is not just about who can compete on the athletic field. This is about whether a president can force compliance with his will, without regard for the rule of law,” she said.

The debate over transgender participation in sports has been a focal point of political discourse, particularly among Republicans, who have leveraged the issue as part of a broader cultural debate ahead of the 2024 election. Trump has also indicated his intention to push the International Olympic Committee to revise its policies on transgender athletes ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
