Trump Campaign Accused Of Concealing Millions In Legal Payments

A recent complaint lodged with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) by the Campaign Legal Center (CLC) has ignited a controversy surrounding the Trump campaign’s financial practices.

The complaint alleges that the campaign, along with four related political committees, may have violated federal law by concealing payments for a significant portion of former President Donald Trump’s legal expenses.

According to the complaint, between December 7, 2022, and March 18, 2024, the Trump campaign and its associated committees reimbursed compliance firm Red Curve Solutions $7.2 million for legal fees and expenses. However, CLC notes that Red Curve Solutions does not appear to offer legal services, instead specializing in campaign finance reporting and compliance services.

The arrangement between the Trump campaign and Red Curve Solutions, managed by Bradley Crate, who also serves as treasurer for the Trump campaign and the four committees in question, has raised concerns about transparency and compliance with FEC regulations. CLC asserts that the arrangement seems designed to obscure the true recipients of Trump’s legal bills, potentially violating federal disclosure laws.

Saurav Ghosh, CLC’s director of federal reform, emphasized the importance of transparency in campaign finance, stating, “Voters have a right to know exactly how these Trump-affiliated committees are spending their money, particularly since it is unprecedented to see political candidates or committees spending such massive amounts of money on legal expenses.”

The complaint further alleges that the Trump campaign’s arrangement with Red Curve Solutions may also violate federal prohibitions on corporate political contributions. As a limited liability corporation, Red Curve would be legally barred from making contributions to political campaigns, even if fully reimbursed.

The FEC has been urged to investigate these payments promptly, given their ongoing nature. CLC’s filing highlights the potential consequences of undermining transparency in campaign finance reporting and the necessity of upholding federal regulations.

Meanwhile, recent FEC disclosures revealed that Trump’s legal fees are significantly impacting his campaign funds. The Save America political action committee (PAC), linked to the Trump campaign, spent $3.7 million on legal fees for the former president in March alone. While specific details of these expenditures remain undisclosed, filings indicate that Save America has allocated over $59 million towards lawyer fees since the beginning of 2023.

Trump, facing a slew of legal challenges including multiple criminal cases and civil lawsuits, continues to defend himself against allegations ranging from falsifying business records to defamation. Despite these legal battles, Trump maintains his innocence, denying all charges and accusations leveled against him.
