Tragedy Strikes Dominican Republic As Nightclub Roof Collapse Claims Dozens Of Lives.

The death toll from Tuesday’s devastating nightclub roof collapse in the Dominican Republic has continued to rise, with at least 98 people confirmed dead as rescue teams work tirelessly in search of survivors.

The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight at around 12:45 a.m. during a live merengue concert at Jet Set, a renowned nightclub in the capital, Santo Domingo. The venue, famous for its long-running Monday night dance parties, was packed with revellers when the roof suddenly gave way, trapping scores beneath the rubble.

Rescue operations have continued into the night, with emergency crews employing heavy machinery, drones, and search dogs in a desperate effort to locate those still missing. The atmosphere remains tense as loved ones wait anxiously for news of their friends and family.

The disaster has deeply shaken the country, as the event was attended by some of the Dominican Republic’s most prominent figures. Among those confirmed dead or injured are a provincial governor, a member of the Dominican Congress, and two former U.S. Major League Baseball players, whose identities have not yet been officially released.

Jet Set, a cultural landmark for decades, has long been a gathering spot for influential figures and music lovers alike. In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, the club’s owner, Antonio Espaillat, expressed his sorrow: “There are not enough words to express the pain this event causes. What happened has been devastating for everyone.”

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, as the country begins to mourn one of the worst nightclub tragedies in its history. Flags are expected to fly at half-mast in honour of the victims, as national leaders call for unity and support in the face of the disaster.

Emergency services have urged the public to stay clear of the area to allow rescue operations to proceed swiftly, while hospitals in the region remain on high alert to care for the injured.

The Dominican Republic now faces a period of national mourning, as families, friends, and the broader community come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
