Tottenham Thrash Manchester City in Historic Defeat

Tottenham Thrash Manchester City in Historic Defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur delivered a stunning performance to defeat Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium, condemning the Premier League champions to their fifth consecutive loss, a first for the club since 2006. James Maddison scored twice, with Pedro Porro adding a third and Brennan Johnson wrapping up the victory with a fourth goal in the final minutes.

The defeat also marked the end of City’s remarkable 52-match unbeaten streak at home, which had stretched back to just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This was City’s heaviest home loss since a 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in 2003 and their first loss by four goals under Pep Guardiola’s management.

Despite being without their first-choice central defenders and having a bench filled with five teenagers, Tottenham put on an incredible display. The victory came as a major surprise following their recent 2-1 loss to Ipswich, with Spurs showing incredible resilience against a City side struggling in their absence of injured midfielder Rodri.

Maddison, who was among the scorers in Leicester’s 5-2 win over City in 2020, was instrumental in Spurs’ dominance. His goals, combined with Porro’s powerful strike and Johnson’s last-minute finish, left Guardiola’s side reeling. The Tottenham fans were jubilant, singing “you’ll be sacked in the morning” in reference to Guardiola as they celebrated their unexpected triumph.

Guardiola, who had signed a two-year contract extension just two days earlier, now faces uncharted territory in his managerial career. The defeat highlighted the significant absence of Rodri, with City looking a shadow of their usual selves without the Spanish midfielder. With Mateo Kovacic also unavailable, City struggled defensively, and their vulnerability was exposed by Tottenham’s clinical finishing.

In contrast, City’s own attacking efforts were lacklustre. Erling Haaland missed several key opportunities, including a miscontrolled cross from Josko Gvardiol and a blocked shot when he should have scored. A second-half effort from Kevin de Bruyne was also denied by Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario, while Spurs’ centre-back Radu Dragusin made a crucial clearance to deny Haaland a late tap-in.

While City remain in second place in the Premier League, their title hopes are under threat, with Liverpool set to extend their lead to eight points if they win against Southampton. Tottenham, meanwhile, climbed to sixth, just four points behind City.

For Guardiola, this is a difficult period, with his team struggling to regain form. The manager remains determined to turn things around, but the road ahead is uncertain as he searches for solutions to his side’s recent woes. Despite the setback, Guardiola’s commitment to City is unwavering, and he will be looking to bounce back in the coming fixtures.
