Rio Ferdinand Backs Victor Osimhen As Manchester United’s Ideal Striker Signing

Rio Ferdinand Backs Victor Osimhen As Manchester United’s Ideal Striker Signing.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has thrown his weight behind Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, urging the club to prioritise him over Sporting CP’s prolific forward Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Red Devils, under new manager Ruben Amorim, are seeking a clinical centre-forward to address their goal-scoring woes, and Ferdinand’s endorsement of Osimhen has sparked excitement among fans eager for a transformative signing.

Speaking to Mirror Football, Ferdinand highlighted Osimhen’s proven pedigree across multiple leagues and on the international stage, arguing he would be a better fit than Gyokeres, despite the Swede’s impressive form. “I think Gyokeres, everyone’s talking about him. If I’m looking at the market now and had to pick, I’d probably pick Osimhen because of that experience,” Ferdinand said. “He’s shown he’s done it in multiple leagues and internationally as well. He’s a top-class number nine who the young players can learn from.”

Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, led the Turkish Super Lig last season with 26 goals and five assists in 30 appearances, while Gyokeres netted an astonishing 39 goals and eight assists in 33 league games to secure the Portuguese Primeira Liga title with Sporting. Despite Gyokeres’ higher conversion rate (28% compared to Osimhen’s 18.8%), Ferdinand emphasised Osimhen’s versatility and leadership qualities, noting his Serie A Golden Boot win in 2022-23 and consistent performances for Nigeria.

Manchester United’s attack has struggled this season, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee managing just seven Premier League goals combined, contributing to the team’s dismal 44-goal tally—the second-lowest in the league outside relegated sides. The club, sitting 15th in the table and having lost the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham, has already secured Wolves’ Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million and is in talks for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, but a marquee striker remains a priority.

Amorim, who previously coached Gyokeres at Sporting, is reportedly keen on reuniting with the 27-year-old, with United having made informal contact over a potential £70 million deal. However, Sporting’s insistence on an £85 million release clause and competition from Arsenal, who are seen as frontrunners, could complicate negotiations. Osimhen, meanwhile, is expected to command a £63 million fee upon returning to Napoli, though his £400,000-per-week wage demands have previously deterred United.

Ferdinand’s preference for Osimhen aligns with sentiments from former United striker Louis Saha, who earlier this season called the Nigerian “exactly the type of player United need.” However, club legend Paul Scholes has advocated for signing both Osimhen and Gyokeres to support Hojlund, suggesting United should maintain three top centre-forwards.

As United navigate financial constraints under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s oversight, the decision between Osimhen’s experience and Gyokeres’ form will be pivotal. With Amorim aiming to overhaul the squad for a top-four push in 2025-26, Osimhen’s potential arrival could signal a bold statement of intent, backed by one of Old Trafford’s most revered voices.
