Revealed: Confessed Killer Ayomide Adeleye Not In Prison, Never Remanded For Murder FIJ Confirms

Revealed: Confessed Killer Ayomide Adeleye Not In Prison, Never Remanded For Murder FIJ Confirms.

Lagos, Nigeria – Reports have surfaced that Ayomide Adeleye, who confessed to the murder of Christianah Idowu, his friend and neighbour, is not currently detained in any correctional facility in Lagos State, according to an exclusive investigation by FIJ.

Adeleye, who was initially arrested and remanded in September, became the subject of speculation in December when whispers of his release began to circulate, causing concern among friends and family regarding the status of the legal proceedings against him.

FIJ previously reported on the attempts to substantiate these rumours, speaking with insiders within the police force who acknowledged hearing similar claims but noted that information was restricted by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). “The police handed him over to the Ikoyi Prison, but the judiciary is slow in its dealings. The warrant doesn’t expire, so I wonder how he secured release for a murder offence,” an insider told FIJ.

Further investigations by FIJ into the records of the NCoS revealed startling details. A reliable source with access to these records stated, “We had one [Ayomide Adeleye] in Ikoyi and one in Kirikiri Medium, but they are no longer with us here. They have been released. None of them was charged with murder or kidnapping.” When pressed for clarification, the source reiterated, “There is no Ayomide Adeleye in any prison in Lagos. Maybe you should ask the police because they are the ones who obtained the remand warrant.”

Attempts by FIJ to contact Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police spokesman, for comment were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages. Meanwhile, Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, assured FIJ that he would look into the matter and provide a response.

Adeleye, a 200 Level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ogun State, confessed in early September to the murder of Christianah Idowu, a 300 Level student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). On November 5, he appeared before Magistrate Seyi Omodara at the Ogba Magistrate Court, where she issued a remand warrant for his detention at Ikoyi prison pending advice from the DPP.

Despite FIJ’s efforts to communicate with the DPP three days following this court appearance, and the promise of a response, no further information has been forthcoming from the directorate.

This revelation raises significant questions about the judicial process and the handling of high-profile criminal cases in Nigeria.
