Raila Odinga Urges African Nations To Champion Democracy Amid Global Populism Surge

Raila Odinga Urges African Nations To Champion Democracy Amid Global Populism Surge.

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called on African nations to strengthen their commitment to democracy, warning against the rising tide of populism in Western countries that threatens to undermine governance across the continent. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Nigeria, on 21 July 2025, Odinga, a prominent candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, emphasised that Africa must remain a beacon of democratic principles to safeguard its progress and unity.

Odinga, a veteran politician and leader of Kenya’s Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party, highlighted the risks posed by populist movements, which he described as prioritising short-term gains over long-term stability. “Democracy in Africa must be nurtured with vigilance. We cannot afford to emulate the divisive tactics of populism seen in parts of the West, which erode trust in institutions,” he stated. His remarks come amid growing global concerns about political polarisation, with Odinga citing examples of Western leaders exploiting economic discontent to fuel anti-democratic sentiments.

Drawing on his extensive political experience, including his tenure as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, Odinga stressed the importance of inclusive governance and credible elections. He referenced Kenya’s turbulent electoral history, including the 2007 post-election violence and his own unsuccessful presidential bids in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022, often marred by allegations of fraud. “Africa’s strength lies in building systems that ensure every voice is heard and every vote counts,” he said, advocating for robust electoral institutions and judicial independence.

The former Prime Minister also underscored the African Union’s role in promoting democratic standards. As a candidate for the AUC chairmanship, set to be decided in February 2026, Odinga pledged to prioritise good governance and conflict resolution across the continent. His campaign has gained momentum, with endorsements from regional leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto, who praised Odinga’s sacrifices for national unity during a joint framework agreement signed in March 2025. The agreement, aimed at addressing Kenya’s socio-economic challenges, reflects Odinga’s commitment to dialogue over confrontation.

Odinga’s call to action resonates in Nigeria, where recent protests against economic hardship have highlighted the need for accountable leadership. He urged African governments to address youth unemployment and inequality, which he warned could fuel unrest if ignored. “Our young people are our greatest asset. We must invest in their future to prevent the allure of populist rhetoric,” he said, echoing sentiments from his 2013 Wilson Center address, where he envisioned a prosperous Africa driven by a youthful population.

The speech has sparked positive reactions across social media, with users on X praising Odinga’s focus on unity and democratic resilience. Some Nigerian commentators expressed hope that his AUC candidacy could elevate Africa’s global standing. However, Odinga also faced questions about his recent political alignment with President Ruto, which critics within his Azimio coalition have called a betrayal of opposition principles. Responding, Odinga clarified that his engagement aims to stabilise Kenya, not to compromise his democratic ideals.

As Africa navigates complex global challenges, Odinga’s message serves as a timely reminder of the continent’s potential to lead by example. His advocacy for democracy, rooted in decades of political struggle, positions him as a unifying figure in the fight for accountable governance. With the AUC election approaching, Odinga’s vision for a democratic and prosperous Africa continues to inspire hope across the continent.
