Police Service Commission Promotes 12 Commissioners And Over 250 Senior Officers.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the promotion of 267 senior police officers, including 12 Commissioners of Police (CPs) elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs), as part of a comprehensive effort to enhance professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. The promotions, disclosed on Monday, 21 July 2025, by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, followed rigorous examinations and interviews overseen by the commission’s Standing Committee on Police Matters, chaired by DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd). The exercise reflects the PSC’s commitment to merit-based advancement and strengthening the nation’s policing framework.
Among the newly promoted AIGs are Johnson Oluwole Adenola, Commissioner of Police for Oyo State, Ako Benedict Gabriel, head of the Anti-Fraud unit, and Ahmadu Tijani Abdullahi, Commissioner for Jigawa State. Others include Emmanuel Adegbola Aina, acting AIG at the Force Intelligence Bureau, and Omolara Ibidun Oloruntola, alongside Hassan Abdu Yababet (Police College, Jos), Bretet Emmanuel Simon (Taraba), and Enyinnaya Inonachi Adiogu (FCID Gombe Zonal Command). The list is completed by Aminu Baba Raji, Mohammed Mu’azu Usman (Eastern Ports, Port Harcourt), Festus Chinedu Oko (acting AIG, DLS Department), and Ronke N17 Nurat Okunade (Special Fraud Unit, FCID Annex, Lagos). These officers were recognised for their exemplary service across various state commands and specialised units.
In addition to the AIG promotions, 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) were elevated to Commissioners, including Uduak Otu Ita, Sheikh Mohammed Danko, and Charles Ezekwesiri Dike. A further 27 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) advancedwie Shehu Idris, David Adio Alalada, and Hamzat Tambai. The commission also promoted 145 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) to Assistant Commissioners, covering both general duty officers and specialists such as medical doctors, pharmacists, and airwing engineers. Additionally, 29 Superintendents of Police (SPs) and 38 Deputy Superintendents (DSPs) were elevated to their next ranks, reflecting a broad spectrum of expertise within the force.
PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd) emphasised that the promotions align with global best practices, ensuring officers meet high professional standards. “These examinations are here to stay,” Argungu stated, underscoring the commission’s dedication to building a disciplined and competent police force. He urged the newly promoted officers to intensify efforts against banditry, kidnapping, and other crimes, leveraging their expertise to enhance public safety. One ACP was excluded from promotion due to absence during the exercise, maintaining the integrity of the process.
The promotions have been widely welcomed as a boost to morale and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
