NYSC Corps Member Raye Apologises For Controversial ‘Lagos Is Smelling’ Remark.

TikToker and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, widely known as Raye, has publicly apologised after sparking controversy with her remark that “Lagos is smelling.”

Raye made the statement in a viral video as part of a 30-day rant challenge aimed at drawing attention to the economic hardship faced by Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. However, the comment stirred mixed reactions, with some Nigerians supporting her stance while others argued that her words violated NYSC regulations.

In a follow-up post, Raye expressed surprise that the challenge did not even extend beyond Day 2 before attracting widespread attention. She has now apologised to those offended, particularly Lagos residents.

“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry,” she wrote. “But as a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and quality of air. If the way I put it triggered your emotions and love for your birth state, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to talk down on your birth state.”

Lagos State Government Reacts

Responding to the controversy, the Lagos State Government told journalists that individuals who hold such views are often those who move into the state and place pressure on its infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the NYSC has taken official notice of the issue. Raye was summoned on Sunday to appear before NYSC Local Government Inspectors (LGIs) regarding her 30-day rant challenge. However, when she arrived at their office on Monday, accompanied by three lawyers and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, the officials were reportedly absent.

As the debate surrounding her comments continues, it remains to be seen whether the NYSC will take further action or if the apology will settle the matter.
