NIS Reveals Plan For Nationwide Adoption Of International Passports

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has declared its intention to make international passports mandatory for all Nigerian citizens, both within the country and abroad.

Aminu Shamsuddin, the Comptroller of Immigration for Kwara Command, shared this development during a news briefing held in Ilorin on Wednesday.

Shamsuddin credited the proactive efforts of Caroline Adepoju, the Controller-General of NIS, for spearheading initiatives aimed at ensuring widespread possession of international passports among Nigerians.

One notable measure has been the approval of a Passport Front Office in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara, designed to facilitate easier access to passport services and alleviate congestion at the Ilorin office.

Explaining the significance of the international passport, Shamsuddin emphasized its role as a comprehensive means of identification. He highlighted that, through a registered phone number, an individual’s identity and information can be easily accessed, both within Nigeria and internationally.

“Passport is the first thing that will be demanded in any country around the world, to know a person’s information and crime record,” Shamsuddin stated, underlining the global importance of this document.

Acknowledging the increasing demand for passports, the comptroller revealed NIS’s commitment to streamlining services and reducing applicants’ stress. To keep up with dynamic changes, Shamsuddin emphasized the continuous improvement of the application process, with the added convenience of downloading applications from the comfort of one’s home. He also highlighted the freedom to choose locations for capturing and collecting passports.

In a bid to enhance accuracy and avoid issues like misspelled names and incorrect applicant information, Shamsuddin highlighted the elimination of third-party involvement during the registration process.

“We need people to accept the changes that are ongoing in order to maintain our standard, as our passport is acceptable all over the world,” Shamsuddin urged, emphasizing the global recognition of the Nigerian passport.

As the NIS strives to adapt to evolving needs, the comptroller appealed for media support in disseminating information and encouraged public awareness on the importance of passport application, renewal, and other related services.
