Nigerian Lawmakers Announce Interactive Session On Tax Reform Bills

Nigerian Lawmakers Announce Interactive Session On Tax Reform Bills.

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has scheduled an interactive session for Monday, November 18, 2024, to discuss the tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The session, which will take place at the Temporary Chamber of the House, will begin promptly at 10:00 am.

Akin Rotimi, Spokesman for the House, confirmed the session in a statement issued on Sunday, emphasising its importance in fostering dialogue between lawmakers and stakeholders. The interactive session aims to allow Members of the House to engage directly with key figures behind the tax reform bills from the executive branch, seeking clarifications and gaining a deeper understanding of the proposed changes.

Rotimi noted that this platform would enable Honourable Members to ask critical questions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the reforms, which will be pivotal for strengthening the legislative process and enhancing the quality of debates surrounding the bills.

The announcement comes amid ongoing controversy over the proposed reforms. In early October 2024, President Tinubu forwarded four significant tax reform bills to the National Assembly, including the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

Despite the potential for increased national revenue, the bills have faced opposition, particularly from the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum, who have expressed concerns over the value-added tax (VAT) derivation model proposed in the Nigeria Tax Bill. The National Economic Council has also rejected the model.

However, President Tinubu has remained steadfast, urging that the bills undergo the usual parliamentary procedures, allowing for further input from all stakeholders.

Supporters of the reforms, including members of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, such as Taiwo Oyedele, argue that the changes will create a more equitable tax system in Nigeria, benefiting the country’s fiscal policy and governance.

The interactive session on Monday is expected to provide a crucial opportunity for lawmakers to explore the implications of the reforms and contribute to the ongoing debate.
