No gainsaying the fact that Africa is richly blessed with thousands of artefacts, admirable locations, human and natural resources which makes it popular and significant among the committee of continents around the world.

One of the notable resources Africa is blessed with is the many attractive mountains in different parts of African countries with Mount Kilimanjaro as one of the most popular mountains in Africa.

Findings show that South Africa’s Barberton Greenstone Belt is the oldest mountain range in the world, dating back around three hundred and six billion years.

Aside from the fact that it adds beauty to wherever it is located and also serves as a tourist attraction, Mountain has also given room for mountain climbing, a sport or hobby of hiking and climbing mountains.





Highest Mountains In Africa

1. Mount Kilimanjaro: The mount Kilimanjaro, also known as the roof of Africa is the tallest mountain in Africa and it is situated in Northern Tanzania close to the Kenya border.

The 5,895 metres tall mountain is the biggest and highest mountain in Africa and it reaches almost six kilometres to the sky. 

Given its shape and ease of summiting, the mountain has around 50,000 visitors who attempt to reach its peak every year.

2. Mount Kenya: It is regarded as the second-highest mountains In Africa.

The 5,199 metres tall mountain is located in middle Kenya, specifically at the Kenya National Park.

Mount Kenya, which was covered by an ice cap for thousands of years is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya.

The mountain has an area of 715 km which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Mount Kenya is the main water catchment area for two large rivers in the country and it receives over 16,000 visitors per year.

3. Mount Stanley: The mountain which forms the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo consists of two twin summits and several lower peaks.

It is the third highest mountain in Africa, after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.

The 5,109 meters tall mountain is part of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

4. Mount Meru: The mountain is Tanzania’s among the highest mountains In Africa and it is surrounded by the safari hot-spot Arusha National Park.

It is considered to be the centre of all the physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes.

According to some scholars, the sun along with all the planets circle around the mountain makes it difficult to determine its particular location.

Also, several versions of cosmology in existing Hindu texts described the mountain as being surrounded by Mandrachala Mountain to the east, Kumuda Mountain to the north, Kailasa to the south and Suparshva Mountain to the west.

The 4,562 meters mountain is located in Tanzania

5. Mount Semien: The 4,550 meters mountain which is located in northern Ethiopia is part of the Ethiopian Highlands and also a World Heritage Site.

The mountains consist of plateaus separated by valleys and rising to pinnacles which formed prior to the creation of the Rift Valley.

The Semien Mountains are highly eroded as a result of human land-use practices and as a result of the topography of the area.

The Semiens are remarkable as being one of the few spots in Africa where snow regularly falls.

Other popular and high Mountain In Africa includes Mount Elgon, which is 4, 321 metres tall, Atlas Mountains (4,165 meters), The Drakensberg (3,475 meters), Jabel Marra (3,042 meters) and Mount Oku (3,011 meters).
