The executive arm of the Lagos State government has formally announced its decision to designate the last week of September every year for the celebration of Yoruba culture.
This decision comes in response to a resolution passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly during a sitting held on September 19, 2023.
The decision was conveyed to the State Assembly through a letter dated April 8, 2024, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
The letter, read by the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, highlighted the government’s commitment to activating Yoruba cultural heritage and establishing a special day to honour Yoruba culture.
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his cabinet for this significant decision. He emphasised the importance of preserving Yoruba culture and heritage and assured the executive of the House’s support in ensuring the success of the planned Yoruba Week celebration.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State House of Assembly paid tribute to the late former governor of old Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, who was recently laid to rest. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described the late politician as a pan-Nigerian figure who supported the Yoruba people and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during challenging times, particularly during the struggle for Chief MKO Abiola. Obasa recalled Ezeife’s significant gesture of stepping down for Olu Falae in 1999, acknowledging his enduring legacy of unity and support for democratic ideals.
