The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has ordered a restriction on vehicular movement in Edo State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.

This directive, which limits movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day, is part of a broader effort to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible election process.

Seventeen political parties are set to participate in the election, with the major contenders being the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Labour Party.

In a statement released on Friday, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi explained that the movement restriction applies to roads, waterways, and all forms of transportation, but exempts those on essential duties. Accredited media personnel, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders will be allowed to move freely during the restricted hours.

Adejobi stated that the IGP has also banned security aides and escorts from accompanying VIPs to polling stations and collation centers. Unauthorized security personnel, quasi-security outfits, and the use of sirens by non-emergency vehicles are prohibited during the election.

Additionally, special provisions will be made for vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and the elderly. Adejobi emphasized the importance of ensuring that all polling stations, whether in urban or rural areas, are accessible to everyone.

The IGP also warned against prank calls to emergency numbers and urged residents to report any suspicious activities that could disrupt the election process. Citizens are encouraged to use text messages for operational purposes, with designated helplines provided for inquiries and reporting.

The IGP, through Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Frank Emeka Mba, who is overseeing the Edo election, urged political parties and their supporters to comply with electoral laws. He stressed that any attempt to disrupt the process will be met with strict legal consequences.

Egbetokun reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a safe and democratic environment for the election, calling for collaboration to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
