Historic Moment As Governor Makinde Presents New Alaafin Of Oyo.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially presented Oba Akeem Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, marking the end of a two-year wait for the revered Yoruba throne. The presentation took place today, Saturday, 5 April 2025, at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo town, where a jubilant crowd gathered to welcome their new monarch.

Governor Makinde, addressing the throng of dignitaries and residents, proudly declared, “On the 10th of January 2025, I affixed my signature to the recommendation of the Oyo Mesi, confirming Oba Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. Today, I present him to the people of Oyo and the world. Those who doubted or questioned this moment should come and see for themselves.” His words were met with resounding cheers, as the ancient town buzzed with excitement.

Oba Owoade, who received his staff of office and certificate of appointment from the governor on 13 January 2025 at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, ascended the throne following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. The new Alaafin, aged 49, completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on 29 March, a significant step in preparing him for his role as the custodian of Oyo’s rich cultural heritage.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Oyo and beyond. “I thank you all for your unwavering support,” he said. “I promise to always stand with you, just as you have stood by me.” His pledge to serve and unite the community resonated deeply with the audience, who greeted his words with applause and chants of “Kabiyesi,” a traditional honorific for Yoruba monarchs.

The coronation ceremony was a grand affair, attended by an array of prominent figures, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams. Other notable attendees included the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Kola Adewusi, and Senator Yinus Akintunde, representing Oyo Central. Their presence underscored the significance of the event, not just for Oyo State but for the entire Yoruba race.

The Oyo State government spared no effort in ensuring the occasion was both secure and memorable. Security operatives were deployed to strategic locations across the town, while multiple venues, including Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, and the Palace of the Alaafin, hosted various aspects of the festivities. The meticulous planning reflected Governor Makinde’s commitment to honouring the traditions of the Oyo Kingdom.

Oba Owoade’s journey to the throne was not without its challenges. His selection followed months of deliberation, traditional divinations by the Oyo Mesi (kingmakers), and legal disputes from other contenders. Despite these hurdles, Governor Makinde’s approval in January cemented Owoade’s position, a decision widely supported by the majority of Oyo’s residents. Archbishop Emeritus Ayo Ladigbolu, a former aspirant for the throne, praised the outcome, stating, “Oyo needs leadership, peace, and progress. The people are pleased to have a king, and all hands are on deck for a successful reign.”

As the 46th Alaafin, Oba Akeem Owoade steps into a role of immense historical and cultural importance. Known for his entrepreneurial ventures in Canada, where he served as a project coordinator at Manitoba Hydro, the new monarch brings a blend of modern experience and deep-rooted tradition to the throne. His return to Nigeria in March to commence the necessary rites signalled his dedication to fulfilling his royal duties.

The streets of Oyo remain alive with celebration as the town embraces its new leader. For the people of Oyo State and the wider Yoruba community, this day marks a new chapter—one of unity, hope, and pride in their enduring heritage.
