FG And Meta Join Forces To Boost AI Innovation In Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has partnered with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, to launch the “Llama Impact Accelerator,” an eight-month programme aimed at supporting AI startups in Nigeria. The initiative, announced on 10 June 2025, seeks to harness artificial intelligence to address critical challenges in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, security, and more.

The Llama Impact Accelerator will provide selected startups with access to Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, enabling them to develop innovative solutions tailored to Nigeria’s unique needs. The programme is designed to foster local talent, drive economic growth, and position Nigeria as a hub for AI innovation in Africa. Startups participating in the initiative will benefit from mentorship, technical support, and resources to scale their projects, with a focus on creating impactful, scalable solutions.

According to posts across social media, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to leveraging AI for societal good. The programme will empower Nigerian entrepreneurs to tackle pressing issues, such as improving agricultural productivity, enhancing healthcare delivery, and strengthening security systems through cutting-edge AI applications. This collaboration marks a significant step in Meta’s ongoing efforts to support digital transformation in emerging markets.

A spokesperson for the Federal Government highlighted the programme’s potential to drive job creation and innovation, stating, “This partnership with Meta underscores our commitment to building a knowledge-based economy. By empowering our youth with AI tools, we are paving the way for sustainable development and global competitiveness.”

Meta’s involvement builds on its broader strategy to advance AI development globally, including the release of its open-source Llama model, which has been widely adopted by developers. The company’s collaboration with the FG also aligns with its recent efforts to bolster AI infrastructure, as evidenced by its investments in data centres and partnerships with tech startups worldwide.

Applications for the Llama Impact Accelerator are now open, with interested startups encouraged to apply through the official portal. The programme is expected to run for eight months, culminating in a showcase of innovative AI solutions designed to transform Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape.

This partnership signals a bright future for AI in Nigeria, fostering a new generation of tech innovators and reinforcing the country’s position as a leader in Africa’s digital revolution.
