EU Reaffirms Commitment To Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Ecosystem.

The European Union has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation, recognising its potential to revitalise the economy and create employment opportunities for young people.

Through its Global Gateway Strategy, the EU is spearheading digital investments in Nigeria with a dedicated Digital Package worth €820 million. This initiative focuses on building robust digital and governance infrastructure, developing digital skills, and fostering job creation.

Speaking at the Omniverse Summit in Lagos, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, emphasised the significance of collaboration in driving Africa’s digital future. He highlighted the role of events like the summit in connecting startups, policymakers, and innovators to build a dynamic digital ecosystem.

“The European Union is very proud to partner with the Omniverse Summit because it aligns with our Global Gateway Strategy of cooperation,” Mignot stated. “We are working alongside Germany and Nigerian partners to connect people and support innovation. Our goal is to facilitate a triple transition—green, digital, and inclusive—creating jobs and opportunities, especially for young Nigerians.”

He further stressed the EU’s focus on digitalisation, underlining the importance of regulatory support for technological advancements. “Digitalisation is at the heart of our priorities in Nigeria. We are supporting regulatory frameworks because the digital world and innovations require clear guidelines to thrive.”

Reaffirming the EU’s long-term commitment, Mignot noted, “We remain dedicated to our promise of over €800 million in digital investments. The challenges humanity faces can only be solved through collective action, and we believe Nigeria, Africa, and Europe’s destinies are closely linked. By supporting Nigerian youth, we aim to provide opportunities to upgrade their skills and secure employment. I am confident that this summit will spark new projects, partnerships, and business deals.”

The Omniverse Summit is organised in collaboration with several partners, including the European Union, GIZ’s Sustainable Economic Development Cluster (SEED) and Digital Transformation Centre Nigeria, the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Federal Ministry for Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy.

This partnership underscores the EU’s ongoing efforts to drive digital innovation and economic growth across Nigeria.
