Dele Farotimi’s Book Becomes Amazon Bestseller Amid Controversy

Dele Farotimi’s Book Becomes Amazon Bestseller Amid Controversy.

Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, authored by retired Nigerian lawyer Dele Farotimi, has soared to the number one spot on Amazon’s bestseller list in the global politics category. The book’s newfound popularity comes in the wake of Farotimi’s recent arrest, which has sparked widespread outrage and reignited public interest in his work.

Farotimi was arrested earlier this week in Lagos by armed police on the orders of renowned lawyer and businessman Afe Babalola. He was subsequently transported to Ado Ekiti, where he remains in custody pending a bail hearing scheduled for 10 December.

The arrest has drawn sharp criticism, with many Nigerians accusing Babalola of leveraging his influence to silence dissent. Civil society groups, lawyers, and activists have condemned the detention as an assault on free speech and democracy.

Originally published in July 2024, Farotimi’s book had received little attention until the controversy unfolded. The work provides a scathing critique of Nigeria’s judiciary, accusing powerful figures, including Afe Babalola, of systemic corruption and unethical practices.

In one particularly striking section, Farotimi alleges that Babalola “compromised the Supreme Court and the remaining semblance of integrity it might have had,” referencing a specific case where judicial outcomes were allegedly manipulated through bribes and backdoor dealings.

The controversy has propelled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System to the forefront of public discourse. The book’s sales have skyrocketed, with readers eager to explore the revelations that have sparked national and international debate.

Remarkably, the publication has outperformed globally acclaimed titles such as Why Nations Fail on Amazon’s charts, an impressive achievement for a Nigerian-themed book. Local bookstores have also reported a surge in demand, with many readers expressing curiosity about the allegations that have put the nation’s judiciary under intense scrutiny.

The Nigerian police have charged Farotimi with publishing material “likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or disturb the public peace.” However, critics have dismissed these charges as baseless, framing them as an attempt to intimidate and silence the author.

Babalola, a 93-year-old senior lawyer with a towering reputation in Ekiti State, has faced repeated allegations of corrupt practices within the judiciary. While he has consistently denied any wrongdoing, Farotimi’s arrest has renewed public scrutiny of his legacy and actions.

The incident has ignited a broader conversation about corruption, justice, and free speech in Nigeria. As Farotimi’s case unfolds, it has highlighted the resilience of public discourse and the enduring power of literature to challenge established norms and demand accountability.

Farotimi’s book, now a bestseller, stands as both a critique of systemic injustice and a symbol of resistance against attempts to stifle dissenting voices.
