Coping with anxiety is one of the most exhausting experience.
No one wants to live in constant horror of the worst-case scenario occurring. But, unfortunately, I live with fear, and I am sure many people are going through it. Virus, bandits, a ban on Twitter, terrorism; there is a lot of anxiety everywhere around us today. Usually, the causes of these threats can’t be controlled, which makes us spiral into this dark hole of fear. We often get consumed by our worries, whatever the concerns may be, be it global, political, or personal.
When our worries and fears engulf us, we get this feeling of being powerless and helpless. This space doesn’t encourage change or peace of mind. to get the best from life and be the most of ourselves, we must take good care of our mental health. That implies coping with our anxiety and finding ways to calm ourselves down. Experts established some strategies and methods to help us better manage our situations whenever we feel overwhelmed and triggered.
This article would tell you some of these methods that have helped me manage my anxiety better. Note: I am just a writer who wants to share her opinion based on her experiences; hence, what worked for me may not help you and vice versa.
Tips On Coping With Anxiety
take a break and breath; when you start feeling overwhelmed by anything, try to think of what exactly got you skittish in the first place. Anxiety is being lost in your past or wondering too much about the future. As a case in point, I worry too much that something terrible will happen while some people get upset over past events. We all are sadly not being mindful of the present moment. When you feel your anxiety welling up, take some time and stop and do some breathing exercise and remind yourself to focus on the present. The breathing exercises help you relax while relieving your mind and body of stress.
Focus On What You Can Change
We have to understand that life is quite unpredictable, and we cant have total control of things happening around us. Therefore, we shouldn’t focus on the worst-case scenarios; instead, we should find a way to deal with the unknown. whenever you are having an anxiety attack, ask yourself, can the source of my anxiety attack be changed? If you can’t change it, then it is advised to let it go because that isn’t your burden to carry. But if you can change it, do everything within your power to change it.
Develop A Self-Care Routine
You deserve to pamper yourself, pray, treat yourself to a spa day, a nice dinner, drink enough water, listen to music, paint, write, dance crazy. Do something that makes you happy and at ease, whatever that activity may be. You deserve to unwind once in a while.
Indulge Talk Therapy
Sometimes, keeping all of these thoughts to ourselves can be overwhelming, so talk to someone you could trust or a professional. This person would help keep track of your progress and be your accountability partner.
Change Your Eating Habits
Some foods should be avoided when you are coping with anxiety. Foods like; sugars, caffeine, alcohol, and fatty foods. Researchers warn against the intake of these foods; they say they have a lasting effect in the long run.
Like I mentioned earlier, living with anxiety is a tedious activity that leaves all our joints and muscles sore. Coping with stress is a gradual process; we take it a day at a time; I still find myself falling into that dark hole once in a while. For example, I checked the gas three time while writing this article but was able to snap out of it. So it is customary to overthink; we need to be more conscious enough not to let these thoughts consume us.
