Colombian Presidential Candidate Shot In Shocking Attack At Bogotá Rally

Colombian Presidential Candidate Shot In Shocking Attack At Bogotá Rally.

A Colombian presidential candidate, Miguel Uribe Turbay, was brutally attacked on Saturday, sustaining three gunshot wounds, including two to the head, during a campaign event in the capital, Bogotá. The 39-year-old politician was addressing a small crowd in a park when the shocking incident occurred, plunging the nation into a state of alarm and grief.

Local media report that police swiftly apprehended a 15-year-old suspect at the scene. Mobile phone footage circulating online appears to capture the harrowing moment Uribe was shot mid-speech, causing panicked attendees to scatter in fear.

Paramedics confirmed that Uribe, a prominent figure from the Centro Democrático party, was struck in the knee and twice in the head, according to the AFP news agency. He was promptly airlifted to the Sante Fe Clinic, where he remains in critical condition. Supporters have gathered outside the hospital, holding a solemn vigil for the candidate’s recovery.

Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, issued an emotional plea, urging the nation to unite in prayer. “Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who are treating him,” she said in a heartfelt statement.

The Centro Democrático party condemned the attack in the strongest terms, declaring it a grave threat to “democracy and freedom in Colombia.” The government of left-wing President Gustavo Petro echoed this sentiment, stating it “categorically and forcefully” rejected the assault as “an act of violence not only against his person, but also against democracy.”

International condemnation followed, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denouncing the shooting as a “direct threat to democracy.”

Uribe, who announced his candidacy for next year’s presidential election in October, hails from a prominent political family with ties to Colombia’s Liberal Party. His father was a respected union leader and businessman, while his mother, Diana Turbay, was a journalist tragically killed in 1991 during a rescue attempt following her kidnapping by the Medellín drugs cartel, then led by the notorious Pablo Escobar.

As the nation reels from this brazen attack, questions loom over the safety of political figures and the stability of Colombia’s democratic process. Authorities have yet to release further details about the motive behind the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The thoughts of Colombians and the international community are with Miguel Uribe Turbay and his family during this critical time.
