President Tinubu Appoints Omotenioye Majekodunmi As New Director-General Of Nigeria’s National Council On Climate Change.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), marking a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges. The announcement, made on Thursday by Presidential Spokesperson Mr Bayo Onanuga, underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing climate action and sustainable development.

Mrs Majekodunmi, a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with over 17 years of experience, succeeds Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe, who served as the council’s pioneer head since her appointment in June 2024. Majekodunmi’s extensive background in renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance positions her as a formidable leader to steer Nigeria’s climate agenda forward. Her previous role as the NCCC’s Financial Adviser saw her play a pivotal part in shaping the country’s climate policies and strengthening its international engagements on environmental matters.

The appointment has been hailed as a strategic move to bolster Nigeria’s green revolution. Majekodunmi’s expertise is expected to drive innovative approaches to climate finance and policy implementation, aligning with the Tinubu administration’s vision of tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a catalyst for sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.

President Tinubu expressed gratitude to Dr Maduekwe for her dedicated service, noting that her leadership laid a robust foundation for the council’s continued progress. The outgoing Director-General’s efforts in establishing the NCCC as a key player in Nigeria’s climate strategy have been widely acknowledged.

As Nigeria faces increasing climate-related challenges, including flooding and desertification, Majekodunmi’s appointment signals a renewed focus on actionable solutions. Her track record suggests a pragmatic approach to harnessing global and national partnerships to advance renewable energy initiatives and carbon market development.

The presidency has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s climate action landscape, with Majekodunmi’s leadership expected to drive measurable progress. Observers anticipate that her tenure will usher in a new era of sustainability, with policies aimed at fostering economic resilience and environmental stewardship.
