The Labour Party (LP), has announced the suspension of its National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara, for a period of six months. The decision, made by the National Working Committee (NWC), was revealed during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
Opara’s suspension is as a result of her recent confrontation with LP National Chairman, Julius Abure, regarding the alleged mismanagement of funds amounting to N3.5 billion. This confrontation occurred during a press conference where Opara demanded accountability for the funds raised from the sale of nomination forms and other fundraising activities leading up to the 2023 general election.
During an appearance on Arise TV’s ‘Good Morning Show’, Opara further accused the NWC of colluding with the opposition-controlled Edo State Government, which has raised eyebrows within the party.
The NWC’s spokesman cited Opara’s failure to attend a meeting aimed at resolving the conflict as the primary reason for her suspension. He emphasized that the party views her actions as detrimental to its integrity and accused her of working against its interests by associating with expelled party members.
The disciplinary committee, formed by the NWC, recommended Opara’s suspension to the National Executive Council of the party, citing her conduct as grounds for disciplinary action. The suspension, effective immediately, serves as a stern warning to party members regarding the consequences of actions deemed contrary to the party’s objectives.
In response to her suspension, Opara remained unreachable for comment, leaving the details surrounding her reaction unclear.
The LP expressed regret over the necessity of the suspension but affirmed its commitment to upholding the party’s values and ensuring accountability among its members. Despite the setback, the party remains steadfast in its mission to reform and strengthen its position in Nigerian politics.
