Anambra PDP Governorship Candidate Survives Shooting In Abuja.
Chief Jude Ezenwafor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being shot by unknown gunmen in Abuja on Friday night. The incident occurred in the Wuse 2 area as Ezenwafor was returning home from a meeting.
Currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in the capital, Ezenwafor is under medical care, with doctors preparing to perform surgery to remove bullets from his body. Speaking to journalists from his hospital bed, despite enduring significant pain, he recounted the harrowing ordeal. “I’m currently in the hospital. The doctors are making efforts to operate so they can extract the bullets,” he said faintly. Two other individuals accompanying Ezenwafor were also injured in the attack and are receiving medical attention.
The governorship hopeful, a prominent Abuja-based real estate developer, described how the gunmen accosted him in what he believes was a targeted attack. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ezenwafor, who secured the PDP candidacy unopposed in April 2025, is a key contender in the Anambra governorship race scheduled for 8 November 2025. His campaign has focused on transformative policies, including economic diversification, improved security, and infrastructure development. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of political figures as the election approaches.
The PDP has yet to release an official statement, but party sources indicate growing unease about political violence in the region. Supporters of Ezenwafor have expressed solidarity, calling for swift action to ensure justice and enhanced security measures for candidates.
As investigations continue, the incident underscores the challenges facing Nigeria’s political landscape, with many hoping it will prompt renewed efforts to safeguard democratic processes. Ezenwafor remains stable, and his medical team is optimistic about his recovery.
