Brazilian Police Foil Bomb Plot Targeting Lady Gaga’s Record-Breaking Rio Concert

Brazilian Police Foil Bomb Plot Targeting Lady Gaga’s Record-Breaking Rio Concert.

Brazilian authorities have thwarted a sinister bomb plot targeting Lady Gaga’s free concert on Copacabana beach, which drew a staggering two million fans on Saturday. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, working alongside the justice ministry, revealed that suspects had planned to deploy improvised explosives to gain notoriety on social media.

The alleged mastermind and a teenager were arrested in connection with the plot, dubbed “Operation Fake Monster” by police. The ringleader was detained in Rio Grande do Sul for illegal firearm possession, while the teenager was apprehended in Rio for storing child pornography. Police also issued search warrants across Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo, seizing electronic devices and other materials.

According to authorities, the group behind the planned attack was spreading hate speech targeting children, adolescents, and the LGBTQ+ community. They were also promoting the radicalisation of teenagers, encouraging self-harm and violent content as a twisted form of belonging and challenge. The suspects reportedly identified themselves as “Little Monsters,” the nickname for Lady Gaga’s fanbase, though their motives appear to contradict the singer’s message of inclusivity.

Lady Gaga’s team told The Hollywood Reporter they were unaware of the threat until media reports surfaced the morning after the concert. “Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks,” a spokesperson said.

The concert, part of Gaga’s tour to promote her eighth album, Mayhem, was a historic event funded by the city to boost Rio’s economy, with an estimated £75 million economic impact. More than two million attendees, the largest crowd of Gaga’s career, passed through metal detectors and were monitored by drones and facial recognition cameras as part of a massive security operation involving 5,000 officers.

On stage, an emotional Lady Gaga, who last performed in Brazil in 2012, addressed the sea of fans: “You waited for more than 10 years for me.” Draped in a Brazilian flag, she donned costumes inspired by the national football team, captivating the crowd with her signature flair.

The foiled plot has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a triumphant night for Rio and Lady Gaga. Authorities continue to investigate the online networks behind the planned attack, which used coded language and extremist symbolism to recruit and radicalise young people.
