Bauchi State Hisbah Bans DJs And Gala Events To Curb Social Vices In Weddings.
The Bauchi State Shari’a Law Enforcement Agency, known as Hisbah, has introduced strict guidelines for wedding celebrations, prohibiting the use of DJs, gala events, and other activities deemed to promote immorality. Announced on 18 July 2025, the measures aim to address the rising rate of marriage breakdowns and uphold moral values in line with Shari’a principles.
Led by Chairman Professor Hamisu Ya’u and Permanent Commissioner Aminu Isa, the Hisbah unveiled 16 pre-wedding and celebration guidelines during a press briefing in Bauchi. The rules target practices such as Kauyawa Day, male DJs performing at women-only events, and gala events, which the agency believes contribute to immoral behaviour and societal harm.
Professor Ya’u highlighted the increasing divorce cases handled by the Shari’a Commission as a key motivation. “The rising rate of marriage breakups is a concern for us,” he said. “These guidelines protect the institution of marriage and ensure celebrations align with our values.” Notably, only female DJs will be permitted at women-only gatherings to prevent gender mixing, which the Hisbah views as a promoter of immorality.
Reactions among residents are mixed. Some, like local cleric Malam Ibrahim Sani, support the ban, stating, “These steps preserve our traditions and reduce extravagance that burdens families.” However, others worry about the impact on the local entertainment industry, particularly for DJs and event planners reliant on wedding income.
The Hisbah has launched sensitisation campaigns and will collaborate with community leaders to ensure compliance. Commissioner Isa clarified, “We are not against festivity, but celebrations must reflect our values and avoid societal harm.”
Beyond weddings, the Hisbah has been active in social initiatives, recently rehabilitating over 570 commercial sex workers with vocational training and start-up capital. This reflects their broader commitment to moral and economic development in Bauchi.
