Arsenal Crush Leicester To Keep Women’s Super League Title Hopes Alive.
Arsenal kept their Women’s Super League (WSL) title hopes very much alive with a commanding 5-1 victory over Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium, cutting Chelsea’s lead at the top of the table to just three points.
Renee Slegers’ side wasted no time asserting their dominance, opening the scoring after just nine minutes through Caitlin Foord, who finished off Frida Maanum’s precise cross at the back post. Stina Blackstenius doubled the advantage moments later, tapping in from close range, before Foord struck again with a deflected effort from the edge of the area, leaving Leicester goalkeeper Janina Leitzig helpless.

Arsenal continued their attacking flourish in the second half. Beth Mead nodded in Kim Little’s cross to make it four, before Yuka Momiki briefly pulled one back for Leicester with a low drive into the bottom corner. The Gunners swiftly responded through Victoria Pelova, who volleyed home her first goal since returning from an ACL injury in March.
Leicester, who sit 10th in the table, remain seven points above the relegation zone. However, they were completely outclassed on the night by an Arsenal side full of intent and creativity.
Gunners in Ruthless Form Ahead of European Test
The victory was not only a statement in the title race but also an ideal tune-up ahead of Arsenal’s looming UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final clash with Lyon, eight-time winners of the competition. Despite the absence of key players Daphne van Domselaar, Chloe Kelly, and WSL top scorer Alessia Russo due to injuries, Arsenal looked sharp and fluid in attack.
Slegers offered a positive update on the injured duo of Kelly and Russo, stating, “It is looking really good for Chloe and Alessia,” raising hopes they could return in time for the weekend’s European showdown.
Arsenal’s build-up play was particularly impressive, with Mariona Caldentey dictating play from deep and orchestrating moves that led to the second and third goals. Mead’s intelligent movement and Blackstenius’ versatility also caused Leicester endless problems.
The Gunners have now scored at least four goals in seven consecutive WSL home games, a run that underlines their attacking depth and consistency. With 34 goals in the league this calendar year – the highest by any team – and a goal difference that continues to swell, they remain a serious threat to Chelsea’s title ambitions.
“We are a big club and a big brand. We play to win, but I also feel the responsibility to play an entertaining type of football,” said Slegers. “We want people to support what we are doing and we want to be inspiring.”
Having won their last eight matches at the Emirates across all competitions by an aggregate score of 31-2, Arsenal now shift their focus to Lyon. Given their form, the French champions could be in for a difficult evening in north London.
