Alaska has declared a disaster following a deadly landslide in Ketchikan, southeastern Alaska, which has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy announced the disaster declaration, stating, “I have directed state agencies to make available all resources and staff for the response effort.”
Ketchikan residents living on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Avenues, as well as Water Street, have been mandated to evacuate. An emergency shelter has been established at Ketchikan High School to accommodate those displaced by the disaster. Additionally, schools in the area will remain closed on Monday, deviating from the planned reopening.
Senator Lisa Murkowski has urged locals to comply with evacuation orders, emphasizing the threat of additional landslides. “Praying for everyone in Ketchikan right now,” she posted on social media. “The city has issued a warning that a second landslide is possible and is mandating evacuation for people who live along 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Avenues as well as parts of Water Street. Officials are encouraging those evacuating to use Madison Street to reach an emergency shelter at the Ketchikan High School.”
Search and rescue operations are being supported by Alaska State Troopers and Wildlife Troopers. A response team from the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, along with federal Department of Transportation personnel, are expected to arrive in Ketchikan on Monday to assist in the ongoing efforts.
