Abia State To Bolster Education With Recruitment Of 4,000 Additional Teachers

Abia State To Bolster Education With Recruitment Of 4,000 Additional Teachers.

In a boost to the education sector, Governor Alex Otti has announced plans to recruit 4,000 additional teachers for primary and secondary schools across Abia State. This ambitious initiative, revealed during the June edition of his monthly media chat, “Gov. Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” on Thursday, 19 June 2025, aims to increase the total number of new teachers in the state to 9,394.

The recruitment drive follows the successful onboarding of 5,394 teachers, who are currently undergoing orientation in Aba and Umuahia. Governor Otti stated that the new recruitment process will commence immediately after the orientation, with the application portal set to open soon. “We expect that the portal will be opened, and applications will be received,” he said, emphasising the urgency of preparing schools for the upcoming academic session.

This move comes in response to a surge in school enrolment, spurred by the state’s free and compulsory education policy introduced in January 2025. The policy ensures that every child in Abia, regardless of their state of origin, has access to education up to junior secondary level. “The idea is to prepare the schools for the next academic session, given the massive enrolment witnessed,” Otti explained, highlighting the need for quality teachers to meet the growing demand.

The Labour Party-led administration has placed education at the heart of its development agenda, with Governor Otti underscoring his personal commitment to the cause. Reflecting on his own background, he noted, “I came from a very poor family, and my future was enhanced by the opportunity I got attending public schools.” His government’s efforts extend beyond teacher recruitment, with plans to equip schools with modern facilities comparable to those in developed countries. “The kind of equipment you expect to see in developed countries is already in Abia, and we are not opening them without equipping them properly,” he assured.

In addition to education, Otti highlighted progress in other sectors, including security, road infrastructure, and sanitation, urging residents to support his vision of building a “New Abia.” The state has also launched the Abia Fostering Innovation Reform School Transformation (AbiaFIRST) programme, which includes training for 8,000 teachers to enhance service delivery and prepare students for global competitiveness.

The announcement has been met with widespread approval. Social media posts reflect public enthusiasm, with users praising Otti’s commitment to education reform. One user noted, “This is how you build a smarter future,” while another described the recruitment as “putting real numbers behind real change.”
