Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, bail request has been denied by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja Division on Friday. The court refused to reverse an earlier ruling of the Abuja Federal High Court refusing his request for bail.
In a unanimous judgment, the three-member panel led by Justice Stephen Adah dismissed the application because it lacked merit.
The court held that given the nature of the charges pending against him and the other defendants before the High Court, such bail requests needed to be handled with caution.
Justice Adah held that Justice Emeka Nwite, who earlier rejected bail for Kyari at the Abuja Federal High Court, appropriately exercised his discretion in refusing to grant Kyari bail.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, is prosecuting Kyari and four members of the IRT, ASP Bawa James, ACP Sunday J. Ubua, Inspector John Nuhu and Inspector Simon Agirgba before Abuja Federal High Court for conspiracy to deal in 17.55kg of cocaine, among others.
Also, Kyari was charged with attempting to obstruct officials of the NDLEA in the conduct of their activities by offering them bribes.
