Manchester City came through a tricky match against Young Boys in Switzerland to maintain a winning start to their Champions League defence.
Of all the firepower they possess in attack, it was defender Manuel Akanji who gave Pep Guardiola’s side the advantage in the opening minutes of the second half.
Fellow centre-back Ruben Dias smashed the bar with a header, and with Anthony Racioppi scrambling on his line to keep the ball out, Akanji pounced to poke the ball over the line.
Erling Haaland fired a shot into the palms of Racioppi as City pushed to double their lead, and within seconds Young Boys were through on goal down the other end of the pitch.
Meschack Elia made a straight run between Rico Lewis Ruben Dias to run onto a Cheikh Niasse through ball and brilliantly finished the end-to-end move by lobbing Ederson.
City hit back, though, through Haaland. Not once, but twice.
His first was converted from the spot after Dias was fouled, and his second wrapped up the win five minutes from time, curling a right-footed effort into the top corner.
