To alleviate the persistent water scarcity affecting Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni has announced an increase in the monthly supply of diesel.
The supply has been raised from 40,000 to 60,000 litres to power boreholes across the city and its environs.
The General Manager of Yobe State Water Corporation, Engr. Mahdi Baba Zarma, revealed this development over the weekend while speaking to correspondents in Damaturu.
He emphasized Governor Buni’s directive to involve the local community in the distribution process to ensure optimal utilization of the diesel for powering public boreholes.
Engr. Zarma stated the critical nature of the water scarcity situation, attributing it to the destruction of a vital 330KV electricity transmission line by unknown vandals. This incident left many boreholes reliant solely on generators, significantly affecting access to clean water for residents.
Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Governor Buni promptly ordered the immediate distribution of diesel to all affected boreholes in Damaturu and surrounding areas. With the increased supply of diesel, Engr. Zarma expressed confidence that the water scarcity issue would be effectively addressed.
