Yemen’s Houthis Declare Support for Iran In Escalating Conflict With Israel

Yemen’s Houthis Declare Support for Iran In Escalating Conflict With Israel.

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Yemen’s Houthi movement has publicly reaffirmed its solidarity with Iran amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Islamic Republic. The Houthis, a key player in Yemen’s complex conflict and a prominent member of Iran’s so-called “Axis of Resistance,” have declared their readiness to join Iran in military actions against Israel, raising concerns about a potential widening of the Middle East conflict.

Houthi Support for Iran Grows Stronger

The Houthi leadership, which controls significant portions of Yemen including the capital Sanaa, issued a statement on Saturday, June 19, 2025, condemning Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and expressing unwavering support for Tehran. According to Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, the group is prepared to target U.S. and Israeli assets in the Red Sea if Washington or Jerusalem escalates their military operations against Iran. “Yemen will not stand idly by while our brotherly Iranian people face aggression,” Saree said during a rally in Sanaa, where thousands of supporters waved banners denouncing Israel and the United States.

The Houthis’ declaration comes as Israel intensifies its campaign against Iran, which began on June 13, 2025, with airstrikes targeting alleged nuclear weapons development sites. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks, including a strike on an Israeli hospital that wounded 240 people. The conflict, now in its second week, has drawn international concern, with the United States recently joining Israel in strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—using B-2 stealth bombers and 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs.

Yemen’s Strategic Role in the Conflict

The Houthis’ pledge to support Iran is not merely rhetorical. The group has a history of launching sophisticated attacks on regional targets, including missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel. Since November 2023, the Houthis have targeted shipping in the Red Sea, initially focusing on vessels linked to Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. These attacks later expanded to include U.S. warships after American forces intervened to protect maritime traffic.

On Sunday, June 22, 2025, Yemen’s Houthi-controlled government condemned the U.S. strikes on Iran as “reckless aggression” and vowed to coordinate with Tehran in response. A Houthi official, speaking to Al Jazeera Mubasher TV, described the group’s potential intervention as “only a matter of time,” signaling that a prior ceasefire agreement with the U.S. may no longer hold in light of the Iran-Israel war.

“Yemen declares readiness to join the Iran-Israel conflict,” the Houthi army announced on X, adding, “Keep your ships away from our territorial waters.” Some unverified reports on Telegram channels claim Yemen has closed the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint for global trade, though no official confirmation has been provided.

Regional and International Reactions

The Houthis’ alignment with Iran has sparked alarm across the Middle East and beyond. The group’s threats to target U.S. ships have heightened fears of disruptions to global shipping routes, particularly in the Red Sea, which handles roughly 10% of world trade. Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both of which have faced Houthi attacks in the past, are reportedly bracing for potential spillover effects.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Palestinian group Hamas, also part of Iran’s Axis of Resistance, have echoed the Houthis’ condemnation of the U.S. and Israeli actions, calling them “barbaric” and “treacherous.” However, Hezbollah, weakened by Israeli strikes in 2024, has been urged by Lebanese officials to avoid direct retaliation, leaving the Houthis as one of Iran’s more active allies in the current conflict.

International leaders have called for de-escalation. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the U.S. bombings in Iran mark a “perilous turn” for the region, urging all parties to halt fighting and return to negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. European powers, including France, Germany, and the UK, have similarly urged Iran to refrain from actions that could further destabilize the region.

What’s Next for Yemen and the Region?

Analysts suggest the Houthis’ involvement could significantly complicate the Israel-Iran conflict. “The Houthis have proven their ability to disrupt regional stability with relatively low-cost but high-impact attacks,” said Dr. Amira Khalil, a Middle East security expert. “Their coordination with Iran could stretch Israeli and U.S. defenses, particularly if they resume Red Sea operations or target U.S. bases in the Gulf.”

For now, the world awaits Iran’s response to the U.S. and Israeli strikes, with the Houthis poised to play a role in any broader retaliation. In Yemen, the Houthi leadership continues to rally public support, framing their stance as a defense of regional sovereignty against Western and Israeli aggression. At a demonstration in Sanaa on June 20, supporters chanted slogans praising Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and vowing to resist “Zionist domination.”

As the conflict unfolds, the Houthis’ actions could prove a critical factor in determining whether the Israel-Iran war remains a bilateral struggle or spirals into a broader regional conflagration. With Yemen’s strategic position and the group’s battle-hardened forces, their involvement is a development that neither Israel nor the United States can afford to ignore.
