As the world commemorates World Health Day 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about the looming threats of diseases, disasters, and other pressing health challenges worldwide.
Observed annually on April 7th, World Health Day serves as a global platform to spotlight pressing health issues demanding urgent attention.
Under the theme “My health, my right,” WHO focused on the fundamental right of every individual to access quality healthcare, education, and essential resources such as clean air and water. Despite the recognition of health as a human right by at least 140 countries, WHO lamented the failure of many nations to enact and enforce laws ensuring universal access to healthcare services.
The organization stated the statistic that over half of the world’s population—approximately 4.5 billion people—remained without full coverage of essential health services in 2021.
Also conflicts, environmental degradation, and the burning of fossil fuels were cited as exacerbating factors, jeopardizing public health and well-being on a global scale.
WHO called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and advocated for investments in clean energy alternatives such as solar, hydro, and wind power. Also recommended the government worldwide to tax tobacco, sugar, and alcohol, the elimination of trans fats, and substantial reductions in the use of antimicrobials in agriculture by 2030.
The organization urged policymakers to prioritize the development of cycling infrastructure, pedestrian-friendly urban spaces, and equitable working conditions for healthcare workers.
WHO stressed the importance of social protection measures to mitigate poverty and address disparities in access to healthcare services.
