Miedema Double Ends Chelsea’s Unbeaten Streak As Man City Seize Champions League Advantage.
Manchester City handed Chelsea their first defeat of the season as Vivianne Miedema’s second-half brace secured a crucial 2-0 victory in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final.
The defeat ended Chelsea’s remarkable 31-game unbeaten streak, which stretched back to last May, and marked manager Sonia Bompastor’s first loss since taking charge at the club.
Miedema Makes the Difference
Coming on as a half-time substitute, Dutch striker Miedema proved to be the decisive factor for City. She broke the deadlock on the hour mark with a powerful strike into the roof of the net before sealing the victory in the 88th minute. The goals took her Women’s Champions League tally to an impressive 31 in 35 appearances.
The win also served as swift revenge for City, who had fallen to Chelsea in a 2-1 defeat during Saturday’s Women’s League Cup final at Pride Park.
City Dominate as Chelsea Struggle
Despite Chelsea’s dominance in the Women’s Super League this season, they struggled to impose themselves in this match. City, particularly strong in the second half, applied sustained pressure, forcing Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton into action with several long-range efforts.
Chelsea had limited attacking opportunities, with their best chances coming late in the game. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd struck the crossbar, while Wieke Kaptein’s shot was well saved by City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.
Chelsea Face Must-Win Second Leg
The defeat not only ended Chelsea’s long unbeaten run but also denied them the chance to set a new record for the longest unbeaten streak by a Women’s Super League team across all competitions.
With the second leg at Stamford Bridge set for Thursday, 27 March (20:00 GMT), Chelsea have work to do as they continue their pursuit of an unprecedented four trophies this season.
Cushing’s Impact for City
For City’s interim manager Nick Cushing, the victory was a statement result. Having returned to the club just eight days ago to replace Gareth Taylor, he has quickly demonstrated his ability to get the best out of the team.
City and Chelsea are locked in a four-game series, with their WSL clash coming up on Sunday before their Champions League showdown in London. Bompastor will be demanding an immediate response from her side, who remain determined to claim their first European title.
Bronze Calls for a Response
Reflecting on the performance, Chelsea’s Lucy Bronze, who has won the Champions League five times with Lyon and Barcelona, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings.
“I don’t think we were good enough,” Bronze admitted after the match. “We were sloppy in our passing and didn’t press well enough. Sonia [Bompastor] told us at half-time we needed to improve, and while we got better in the second half, that’s when they scored their goals.”
Bronze also highlighted the added pressure Chelsea face due to their success:
“Everyone raises their game when they play Chelsea because they want to be the first team to beat us – and today, City managed to do that. We just have to go back and be better for the weekend.”
With Chelsea looking to bounce back quickly, all eyes will be on the return leg at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues will hope to overturn the deficit and keep their Champions League dream alive.
