WAFU B U-20 Championship: Flying Eagles Squad Named As Soname Pledges Naira Incentives.
In preparation for the upcoming WAFU B U-20 Championship in Lome, Togo, Head Coach Aliyu Zubair has named a squad of 20 players, including midfielder Nasiru Salihu and forward Charles Agada. The competition, set to kick off on Thursday, serves as a qualifier for the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
The Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U-20 national team, arrived in Lome on Tuesday afternoon after a rigorous one-week training camp at the prestigious Remo Stars Training Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State. The camp, aimed at fine-tuning the team’s preparations, was hosted by Remo Stars Football Club’s president, Hon. Kunle Soname.
Soname has further boosted the team’s morale by promising a financial reward of N5 million if they successfully defend their title in Togo. He also presented the squad with N1 million prior to their departure, underscoring his belief in their abilities.
The Flying Eagles are the reigning champions, having won the last edition of the tournament held in Niamey, Niger Republic. Their campaign to retain the trophy begins on Friday, when they face Burkina Faso in their opening match. They are placed in Group B alongside Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, with the top two teams progressing to the semi-finals. Group A consists of hosts Togo, Ghana, Niger Republic, and Benin Republic.
As the team prepares to embark on their title defence, hopes are high that they will bring home the trophy once again, inspired by both their previous success and the support from Hon. Soname.
