WAEC Confirms 2025 WASSCE Results Release Date, Debunks Cancellation Rumours.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates will be released on or before Monday, 4 August 2025. The council has also firmly dismissed circulating rumours claiming the examination was cancelled due to alleged widespread malpractice, labelling such reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 20 July 2025, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, clarified that the viral press release, dated 19 July, alleging collaboration between WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education to nullify the examination, was entirely fabricated. The council stressed that the 2025 WASSCE, conducted between 24 April and 20 June 2025, was successfully completed, with marking of scripts now concluded. “The attention of WAEC, Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all papers written during the just-concluded WASSCE. This is the handiwork of mischief-makers bent on causing confusion,” Adesina stated.
The Federal Ministry of Education echoed WAEC’s position, with Director of Press Boriowo Folasade describing the cancellation claims as “fake and intended to cause panic.” The ministry confirmed that the examination proceeded smoothly, with only isolated incidents of malpractice, which were promptly addressed. It urged students, parents, and school administrators to rely solely on verified sources for updates.
WAEC reported that 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 secondary schools participated in the 2025 WASSCE, marking a significant increase of 158,627 candidates compared to the previous year. Of these, 49.63% were male, and 50.37% were female, reflecting a balanced candidature. The examination, spanning 74 subjects and 196 papers, was supervised by approximately 26,000 senior secondary school teachers nominated by various ministries of education.
The council addressed concerns raised during the examination period, including a delay in the English Language Paper 2, which was written late on 28 May 2025 due to logistical challenges aimed at preventing question paper leaks. WAEC reiterated its commitment to maintaining examination integrity through robust monitoring and the use of technology.
As the 4 August release date approaches, WAEC has advised candidates to check results via its official website or digital certificate platform, urging the public to disregard unverified social media reports. The council’s swift response has reassured stakeholders, ensuring confidence in the examination process as students await their results, which will pave the way for university admissions and other post-secondary opportunities.
