Veteran Nigerian Music Producer And Filmmaker Femi Lasode Passes Away At 70.

The Nigerian entertainment industry is reeling from the loss of Obafemi Lasode, a revered music producer, singer, filmmaker, and playwright, who passed away on Friday, 25 July 2025, at the age of 70. The news was announced by Dr Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli, former President of the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), who shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, confirming Lasode’s death after a protracted illness.

Born on 4 December 1955 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Lasode carved an illustrious career that spanned music, film, and theatre, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s creative landscape. He was celebrated for his multifaceted talents, notably as the creative force behind the iconic epic film *Sango*, which brought Nigerian history and mythology to life with unparalleled artistry. His work as a filmmaker was driven by a passion to showcase African stories authentically, inspired by his experiences abroad where he encountered curiosity about Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

Lasode’s contributions extended beyond the silver screen. As a musician and producer, he was known for his ability to blend traditional African sounds with contemporary styles, earning him respect as a visionary in the industry. His role as a former president of PMAN and Chief Executive Officer of Afrikan N Vogue Even Ezra Studios further cemented his influence, mentoring countless talents and shaping the creative sector.

Dr Tee Mac, in his tribute, described Lasode as a “veteran musician, film director, producer, songwriter, and playwright,” extending condolences to his family and the wider community. The announcement, accompanied by a poignant image of Lasode, sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues who remembered him as a warm, innovative, and dedicated figure.

The entertainment community has been quick to honour Lasode’s legacy. Colleagues praised his commitment to elevating Nigerian stories, with one industry peer noting, “Femi’s work on *Sango* was a game-changer; he showed the world the depth of our culture.” Fans across social media shared personal stories of how his music and films inspired them, with many citing his ability to weave narratives that resonated deeply with Nigerian identity.

Details of Lasode’s illness have been kept private, respecting the family’s wishes during this time of mourning. Plans for memorial events are underway, with the industry expected to come together to celebrate his extraordinary contributions. His family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, requesting privacy as they navigate their loss.

Obafemi Lasode’s legacy endures through his timeless works, from the evocative storytelling of *Sango* to his soulful music that captured the spirit of Nigeria. As the nation mourns, his creative genius and dedication to the arts will continue to inspire generations.
