The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), has announced a reverse trade mission, bringing a delegation of 14 South African clean energy decision-makers to the United States.
Scheduled from January 28 to February 7, the visit aims to foster partnerships between South Africa and the United States, accelerating the development of South Africa’s green hydrogen ecosystem.
The delegation, consisting of government, private, and financial sector representatives, will engage with U.S. companies, witness demonstrations of state-of-the-art U.S. technologies, and participate in an interactive financing panel in Houston.
Additionally, they will hold meetings with the U.S. Department of Energy and Rice University. A highlight of the visit includes a tour of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in San Francisco.
On January 30, USTDA will host a public business briefing in Houston, providing a platform for U.S. companies to learn about upcoming commercial opportunities.
Delegates will share insights, and U.S. companies will have the opportunity to present their innovative green hydrogen solutions one-on-one.
Green hydrogen is emerging as a critical player in the global decarbonization effort, particularly in heavy industry and freight transport. South Africa, aligning with its Just Energy Transition Investment Plan, sees green hydrogen as a key component of its energy transition strategy.
The country aims to leverage its existing industrial base and abundant renewable energy resources to drive economic growth and development.
This initiative follows a 2022 USTDA-hosted workshop in Cape Town, where U.S. industry leaders and South African stakeholders explored technical, regulatory, and enabling environment topics to catalyze the green hydrogen sector.
The reverse trade mission aligns with the U.S. government’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, the South Africa Just Energy Transition Partnership, and USTDA’s Global Partnership for Climate-Smart Infrastructure.
