The United States has taken a firm stance against the ongoing conflict in Darfur, announcing sanctions on two key commanders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Ali Yagoub Gibril and Osman Mohamed Hamid Mohamed.
These sanctions come in response to the RSF’s military operations in Darfur, particularly their encirclement and siege of El Fasher in North Darfur, which has placed countless civilians at grave risk.
The RSF’s actions, alongside the Sudanese Armed Forces and allied groups, have resulted in civilian casualties, prompting the United States to intervene. In a press statement issued by Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson, on May 15, 2024, it was emphasized that such attacks must cease immediately, and humanitarian access must be guaranteed, especially when millions are facing the threat of starvation due to the conflict.
The move reflects the United States’ commitment to supporting peace efforts and holding accountable those responsible for perpetuating violence in Sudan.
The Department of the Treasury’s actions, taken under Executive Order 14098, signal a willingness to impose further measures against individuals and institutions escalating the conflict, committing atrocities, or obstructing humanitarian aid.
The Sudanese people’s demand for peace and a return to civilian governance has been echoed by the United States, underscoring the urgency of resolving the conflict and ensuring the well-being of the civilian population.
