The United States and Kenya are gearing up for their fifth negotiating round under the Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP).
The talks, scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. from May 13-17, 2024, signify the commitment of both nations to deepen mutual understanding and resolve differences in key areas of trade and investment.
Led by Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Constance Hamilton and Principal Secretary for Trade Alfred K’Ombudo, the delegations from both countries will delve into crucial topics such as agriculture, workers’ rights and protections, and customs and trade facilitation and enforcement.
These discussions aim to pave the way for high standard commitments that benefit workers, consumers, and businesses, including micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises.
The STIP, launched in July 2022, marks a significant milestone in U.S.-Kenya relations, with a focus on increasing investment, fostering sustainable economic growth, and supporting African regional economic integration.
The partnership emphasize the shared commitment of both nations to promote inclusive economic development and create opportunities for their citizens.
Notably, the negotiations have seen steady progress since their inception, with the last in-person meeting held in April 2024 in Washington, D.C. Despite challenges, both parties remain optimistic about the potential for mutually beneficial outcomes.
The upcoming talks follow the visit of U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to Nairobi, Kenya in July 2023, where productive discussions were held with President William Ruto, senior Kenyan officials, and stakeholders.
