Updated : Slain Soilders: Ovie Of Ewu Kingdom Surrenders To Authorities Amid Allegations Of Involvement In Soldiers’ Killing

Clement Ikolo, Urhukpe 1, the Ovie of Ewu Kingdom in Delta State, has voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities.

This decision follows the recent declaration by the Defence Headquarters, naming him and seven others as wanted individuals in connection to the tragic killing of military personnel within his jurisdiction.

The unfortunate incident occurred on March 14, 2024, when officers and soldiers from the 181 Amphibious Battalion fell victim to violent actions by enraged youths during a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama community.

This turmoil stems from a longstanding land dispute between the Okuama and Okoloba communities, dating back to 2023.

Initially expressing disbelief at being implicated, the monarch vehemently denied any involvement in a video statement released on Thursday, affirming his devout Catholic and Christian beliefs as evidence of his innocence.

However, subsequent reports from Channels TV confirmed his surrender to the state police command, where he arrived at 6:41 pm on Thursday to present himself before the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda.

Prior to his formal surrender, the monarch addressed the press, reiterating his innocence regarding the accusations levelled against him. Meanwhile, the Nigerian military disclosed plans to consider placing a bounty on suspects linked to the soldier’s killings.

The funeral ceremonies for the fallen soldiers took place on Wednesday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja. Among those declared wanted alongside the monarch are Prof. Ekpekpo Arthur, Andaowei Dennis Bakriri, Akevwru Daniel Omotegbo (also known as AMAGBEN), Akata Malawa David, Sinclear Oliki, Reuben Baru, and Igoli Ebi.

In a recent update, the Delta State spokesperson confirmed that the monarch has been handed over to the military following his surrender.

This development underscores the gravity of the situation and the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.
