Maiduguri, Borno State – In a significant development, the management of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has announced the naming of its newly constructed Medical Information Institute After President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The state-of-the-art institute, designed to advance medical education and healthcare delivery through cutting-edge technology, is a testament to UMTH’s commitment to improving healthcare services in Nigeria’s North-East region and beyond. The facility is expected to serve as a hub for training healthcare professionals, fostering innovation in medical ICT, and enhancing patient care through digital solutions.
The decision to name the institute after President Tinubu comes as part of UMTH’s 40th anniversary celebrations, which took place from 12th to 22nd July 2023. The hospital has been recognised for its remarkable contributions to healthcare delivery, serving not only Borno State but also neighbouring countries such as Niger, Cameroon, and Chad. The Chief Medical Director of UMTH, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, praised President Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly through the “Renewed Hope” agenda, which aims to reduce mortality rates and medical tourism by improving local healthcare infrastructure.
During a recent visit to UMTH, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, commended the hospital’s management for its innovative approach to healthcare delivery. He highlighted the institute’s potential to revolutionise Nigeria’s healthcare system by integrating advanced technology and fostering collaboration with other hospitals across the country. Professor Pate noted that the facility aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of harnessing the potential of the health sector to deliver quality services to Nigerians.
The naming ceremony, which is yet to be formally scheduled, is expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria, including representatives from the Federal Government, Borno State Government, and the healthcare community. The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji (Dr) Muhammad Garbai Al-amin El-kanemi, who was appointed the Royal Father for UMTH’s 40th anniversary celebrations, is likely to play a prominent role in the event, given his longstanding support for the hospital’s development.
This announcement follows other recent tributes to President Tinubu, including the naming of a 300-bed specialist hospital in Kaduna State and a military barracks in Abuja after him in 2025. The decision to honour President Tinubu with the naming of the Medical ICT Institute underscores his administration’s focus on healthcare reform and technological advancement, which have been widely acknowledged by stakeholders in the sector.
The UMTH management expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his leadership and support, stating that the institute would serve as a lasting legacy of his commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians. The hospital also reaffirmed its dedication to providing quality healthcare services and advancing medical education in the region.
As the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital continues to grow as a centre of excellence, the new Bola Ahmed Tinubu Medical ICT Institute is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria, fostering innovation, and ensuring that the North-East remains at the forefront of medical advancement.
