Tthe United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Robert Wood, the Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs from the United States, expressed the country’s support for a resolution concerning Somalia.
Ambassador Wood commended the UK for its efforts as the penholder and thanked Council members for their engagement in the resolution.
The resolution focused on extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts and renewing measures such as the arms embargo, travel ban, and asset freeze in Somalia.
The United States cast its vote in favor of the resolution, emphasizing the critical role these measures play in promoting peace and stability in Somalia and the wider region.
Ambassador Wood highlighted the importance of the Panel’s oversight and reporting, which informs the al-Shabaab Sanctions Committee and the Security Council. He expressed anticipation for the swift appointment of experts to continue their essential work.
The U.S. representative underscored that the renewed measures would help limit the influence of groups like al-Shabaab and address the root causes of conflict in Somalia.
He also acknowledged the commendable progress made by the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia in weapons and stockpile management, encouraging continued efforts in this regard.
The United States urged all UN Member States to implement existing sanctions to curb al-Shabaab’s access to funds, weapons, and support.
Additionally, they called on fellow Council members to support designations, emphasizing international support for accountability and the end of impunity for those undermining peace in Somalia.
Expressing disappointment, Ambassador Wood noted the omission of language related to Djibouti and Eritrea, citing a lack of noticeable progress on outstanding issues between the two countries.
The U.S. remains committed to working constructively with all parties to support the normalization of relations between Djibouti and Eritrea.
