On the occasion of the 54th Earth Day, the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to combating plastic pollution, a pressing environmental issue threatening ecosystems worldwide.
Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken emphasized the significance of this year’s Earth Day, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.
Over the past five decades, environmental diplomacy spearheaded by the United States has played a pivotal role in addressing environmental challenges, such as repairing the ozone layer and reducing acid rain pollution.
This year, the focus is on tackling plastic pollution, which poses a grave threat to waterways, oceans, and the diverse marine life dependent on these fragile ecosystems.
The United States is taking proactive measures domestically and internationally to mitigate the impacts of plastic pollution. Leading discussions on a global agreement to combat plastic pollution, the nation aims to safeguard the health of the planet and communities worldwide.
Additionally, the State Department has launched the End Plastic Pollution International Collaborative (EPPIC) initiative, a groundbreaking public-private partnership uniting governments, civil society, and businesses.
Plastic pollution not only jeopardizes environmental health but also exacerbates issues related to water quality, food safety, and public health, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Secretary Blinken urged renewed commitment to addressing this pressing issue, emphasizing the importance of collective action to create a cleaner, more sustainable world.
