Aston Villa Frustrated As Late Winner Against Juventus Is Disallowed By VAR.

Aston Villa’s hopes of a Champions League victory were dashed as Morgan Rogers’ stoppage-time goal was ruled out, extending their winless streak to seven matches.

Rogers’ composed finish appeared to have secured a dramatic victory, but the video assistant referee (VAR) intervened, ruling that Diego Carlos had fouled Juventus goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio in the build-up.

Despite dominating much of the match, Villa were unable to break down a Juventus side renowned for having the best defensive record in Serie A. The result leaves Unai Emery’s side searching for their first win since defeating Bologna 2-0 five weeks ago.

Reflecting on the decision, Emery expressed his frustration with the difference in refereeing standards between domestic and European competitions. “In England, the interpretation is different,” he explained. “The English referees, when actions like that happen, the interpretation is a clear no foul, but in Europe that interpretation is different. When the action happened, I was thinking here in Europe it’s a foul. In England, not.”

Villa had opportunities to take the lead, including a late cameo from Jhon Duran, who has been a reliable impact substitute in the Champions League this season. However, the Colombian was unable to replicate his earlier heroics, leaving the home crowd disappointed.

Juventus came close to snatching a goal themselves, with Emiliano Martinez making a brilliant save to deny Francisco Conceição at the near post. The Portuguese winger’s shot narrowly missed crossing the line, highlighting the fine margins of the game.

The result leaves Villa ninth in their Champions League group standings, while Juventus sit 19th, still searching for their first win in three European outings. For Villa, this marked the first time under Emery that they have endured a seven-match winless run.

Despite the setback, Villa will look to regroup and turn their fortunes around as the season progresses.
